Professor Peter Lineham will give the Gibson Talk on Wednesday 26 August 2026 at 7pm at Mornington Methodist Church.
He is a greatly respected speaker on "The Methodist Approach to Church Structure"
"When the Mornington Methodist congregation began in 1876 it took a very particular shape which outsiders often did not understand. It was immediately part of a mobile structure in which lay preachers and lay workers, leaders meetings and preaching plans ensured that it could incorporate all the energies of its members: a structure at once democratic and highly directed. I want to show how this worked from its roots in English Methodism and its lively Otago offshoots.
I will trace how this affected Mornington Methodist Church but also ponder how much of this remains today."
